Took a long time to get started, but we were waiting for a custom sized window. Otherwise, once the project was on the schedule, they showed up and nailed it! I called them earlier this year about a project to.my house that I wanted done, and after they came out and looked at everything, I never got a quote for the job. I even called the owner asking about it, and he said that he would talk to the guy that came out to my house, and I still couldn't get a quote. I've given up and I'll find a more reliable contractor.

Edit to their response and to emails that I received: This company did indeed reach back out to me and asked me how they can "regain my trust". I responded that I've changed my mind on what I'd like done, and I'd like a 3 season porch addition put on the back of my house instead, and I sent them a picture of where I was talking about. One of their estimators replied back via email, and said that my addition would have a starting cost of 75k-100k, without even coming out to take measurements (I've got a 780sq ft cabin, and the addition would be put on the narrow end on the back). The overhang on my roof is well over 12" so they don't need to tie into my roof, and I also don't need any electricity run because I've already got ample power installed on the exterior or my house. The outlets might need to be raised a bit, but that's it. Because of the extreme estimate without any measurements being taken, I didn't even discuss the details of my house with them. I'm not going to argue with a contractor that doesn't even pay me a visit before giving me such a huge estimate.

I don't know what's going on with this company, but I don't really care. I couldn't get an estimate after they visited me to see what I wanted done, and then I got a crazy high estimate when I changed my mind without them coming to see what already exists or taking any measurements. They've made it very clear to me that they don't want my business, and I refuse to beg a contractor to do a good job when the price tag is going to cost me a pretty penny to begin with.

One of their workers had to swerve to miss an oncoming car that was in his Lane and he did some minor damage to my mailbox. He was very straightforward and honest about it and was willing to replace the mailbox in the post. No problem. He stopped by my house this morning. Nice young gentleman named Matthew. I told him don't worry about it. Weird. Things happen sometimes. I'm just thrilled he didn't wreck his truck.  Judging by this gentleman's actions and honesty, I would be thrilled to have these folks working for me in any capacity.  Employees attitudes say a lot about the people they work for. It was impressive to see JD  assisting the crew , not only demonstrating his skills but his work ethic . Alex , Hayden , and the gentlemanly young crew were hard workers and efficient , very  kind and professional. JD Powell  delivered for us a great ,on time, and in budget project . JD Powell Construction did a fantastic job on some of our home renovations (walk-in bath and changing area, built in closet system, laundry room, kitchen island, exercise room, and stair railings). Our only complaint is that the slope of the pad is quite drastic (5 inches). This made it a challenge to build a level pergola. Other than that we would definitely use their services again.

Why did you decide to work with JD Powell Construction instead of another contractor?

We have known Jon for quite some time. When we would visit with him, he would always show us pictures of projects he was working on and proud of the work being done whether large and elaborate or small and practical. We always knew that if we built, Jon would make sure we had a quality, practical house built for the long term. We never considered another contractor, even though I have worked for a few builders in the distant past.

Describe your experience working with our team throughout the design and construction process?

We took the first step by drafting and revising our floor plan on graph paper. When we made the decision to proceed, Jon lined us up with a trusted draftsperson (before he had in-house abilities) to turn those drawings into the basis for a plan. After a few revisions, we were ready to begin our journey. We were able to ‘walk through’ a computer 3D rendition of our new build to help us visualize the next steps and stay ahead of the selections and planning as not to slow things down once in motion. Jon coordinated the site prep and his team worked the permitting and plan approvals, we were ‘hands off and on our way!’.

Jon and Alex solicited bids and recommended quotes from the sub-contractors they preferred to use on our build. All of whom turned out to be top notch.

After the concrete foundation was in place, Dylan Rusert became our framing foreman. Dylan was always courteous and ready to discuss/answer what was currently being accomplished and planning the next steps with his people on site.

When the house was up and enclosed, Dylan handed it off to Ben Fletcher and his team to rock, finish and trim out the house. Ben did an amazing job with the interior finishes and textures. Abbey Fletcher and Glenda worked on the paint colors and window treatments. Abbey’s hard work and obvious taste in design came through in our finished product.

How did you hear about us?

We heard about JD Powell Construction through several trades in the community. Given the size and scope of our project your company was the logical choice. After meeting John it became clear that this was the right decision for our project.

Why did you decide to work with JD Powell Construction instead of another contractor?

We decided to work with JD Powell for several reasons. Their reputation in the community was outstanding. Recommendations from trades in the LaCrosse area, and their competitive bid. After meeting with them we knew this was the right contracting team for us.

Describe your experience working with our team throughout design and construction.

Meeting with John we talked over specifics of what we wanted to see happen with our outdoor space. The team at JD Powell were great listeners to what were wanting and brought good ideas to bring that plan to fruition. It was important to have a reliable and trusted contractor as we were completing our project from out of state. Alex was wonderful in keeping communication open and explaining each step of the process. We made site visits but many decisions were made over the phone and emails. If we ever had questions we were able to contact either John or Alex and have an answer in minutes. This team was very responsive and made our build project easy! This construction team was very clean, strong work ethic, met project goals from budget to timeline. Our outdoor space turned out amazing and we enjoy using it daily!

What advice would you give someone who is considering building a custom home or remodeling?

We would advise someone starting a project to have some clarity on the scope of your project. Be willing to listen to the experts who may have a better way of doing something or different ideas. Also, to have some patience and flexibility. Sometimes during the build process detours come up, items aren’t available or have been discontinued and you need to pivot. JD Powell Construction will have the knowledge and recommendations for next steps if that happens. Trust them, they do excellent work. We had a great experience working with this team and we are looking forward to working with them again soon on another project we are doing!
